Photography Equipment

My first camera was a Sony DSC-S70, it really was a great camera, with a super fast Ziess lens.  I still have thousands of shots I took with that thing.  I even have the camera somewhere in my shed, in a box!  I think I'll keep it at this point!

People get really excited about hardware, I am not immune.  However, keep in mind that even the best camera will not make a photographer, and a great photographer can get a great shot from any cell phone camera.

So, the goods:

  • Nikon D300
  • Nikon D200
  • Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6
  • Nikon 35mm f/2
  • Sigma 150mm f/2.8
  • Manfrotto Tripod
  • Gitzo Ball Head
  • iPhone 4

Short list for most, but my job is not wildlife, sports or weddings; it's everything else in nature, it's wide and sometimes very close up.  So, this short list keeps me busy and light!

Photography and Post Process

The Camera

I have people ask me all the time; "Wow, how did you do that? In Photoshop?"  My answer, graciously, no, I did it with my camera.  With the camera, many things can be manipulated; the best of which is time.  The rule for most of my color work, be on site way before the sun.  The sun can destroy perfectly good color.  It's just to strong for great photography.

Post Processing

Photoshop, yes!  I remove spots, I color correct, I crop, all in Photoshop.  Some of my photographs are multiple images stitched in Photoshop.  But that's it!  I don't use HDR (unless otherwise stated), I don't change the sky, I don't add trees or clouds.  All of my photographs are exactly what was there in front of me.  If there's something that just doesn't look right, it was done in the camera.

Printing Process

All of my printing is done in my studio on my Epson 9900.

  • Epson's new Ultra-Chrome HDR ink is tested to stay perfect for 200 years.
  • Printed on Lexjet Sunset Select Matte Canvas
  • Glossed with UV protector, also makes them water-proof
  • I custom build my stretcher bars in my studio
